Tune: A Life On The Rolling Sea

A LIFE ON THE DIGGINGS FREE
A life on the diggings free,
A home on the winding creek,
Where the canvas shelters me,
And thousands their fortunes seek.
Like an eagle caged I pine
In this dull and lonely town;
Let the freedom of woods be mine,
And the digger’s wild renown.
A life on the diggings etc
Once more on the brink I stand
Of my newly opened claim;
Down, down through the yielding sand,
Down after the glittering game.
Still farther at every knock
We go from the light of day,
As we dig through the splintering rock,
And dig through the softer clay.
A life on the diggings, &c,
The world is no longer in sight,
The heavens have passed from view;
But with a strong pick and a light
We drive our passage through
And the song of oar hearts shall be,
As we chink the pannikin gay,
Oh, this is the gleam for me,
More bright than the light of day.
A life on the diggings, &c.
