The interest was due sir
As I couldn’t pay you see sir
They sold the farm the other day sir
To pay the mortgage sir
So after twenty years had passed
With all my pains and spoiling
I’m left without a stick sir at least
To keep the pot a boiling
So thus you see we’re floored at last
By over speculation
With the discounts, auction companies
And steamboat navigation
So once more to hard work we’ll go
And forward we will creep yet
And when we get some cash again
We’ll know the way to keep it
So if the truth you understand
If wisdom you’d discover
Take warning by the oldest hand
Upon the Hunter River.
